What is Read Create Play?

Read Create Play is a small business that I set up due to reactions from friends during the 2020 Lockdown. Each day, Pickle and I documented our bookish play and craft activities online and several friends started asking for ideas to explore with their own little troops. Their queries ranged from activity suggestions for themed days to book recommendations. I was in my element but, more importantly, I realised that while the books and crafts were enjoyed, the ideas didn't come easily to everyone. It dawned on me that perhaps not everyone relishes the research and preparation side to bookish play. And this is where I want to help!

I set up Read Create Play as an online UK subscription service creating boxes of bookish craft and play for children to unpack alongside their parents, grandparents, uncles, aunts, carers.... An opportunity for all of the above to invest in building a worthwhile book collection for the little people that they love.

As well as a carefully selected book that you can enjoy together, each box contains everything you’ll need to explore beyond the book, crafting and playing along with the characters and themes. I've taken out the need for you to scroll for ideas or source the supplies. Instead, you can focus that quality time on reading, creating and playing together. Feed their curiosity and inspire their growing imagination while building a life-long love of books.

Over the next year, I plan to introduce three core products:

-Read With Me: a picture book and craft box aimed at ages 3-6.

-Discover With Me: an investigative book and craft box aimed at ages 4-10.

-Family Feast: a special occasion hamper containing a selection of books, games and treats for all the family to enjoy.

My main goal at Read Create Play is to source beautiful and brilliant books to send to your home. I am committed to finding books that can be enjoyed by both you and your little ones.

Books books books!

I LOVE books. I love scouring the shelves of bookshops, libraries and charity shops and stumbling across little gems that have sunken into the depths of time, dusting them off and letting them shine.

Books are always top of my list for present-giving and I relish the opportunity to find the perfect gift for each recipient. In selecting books for Read Create Play, you can be sure that each book will be a new copy and carefully chosen as a gift that I would be proud to give myself.

Oh, and you should know that I ALWAYS, judge a children’s book by its cover!

I wholeheartedly believe that an inviting book will entice a reader. Cressida Cowell sums this up perfectly: “I make the cover shiny and jewel-like, so that in the mind of the child the books are ‘sweets’, not ‘Brussels sprouts’.”

I can’t promise that it won’t be a book already on your shelf but I will be actively seeking out little treasures and new releases plus purposely avoiding best sellers that you could pick up from your weekly trip to the supermarket. Each book will be revealed on social media in the run up to box release date. If you want to keep it a surprise, that's ok too. Plus, even if you have the book, you can enjoy all the lovely crafts and re-gift the book itself to share your love of it with someone else. Next week I will be announcing the picture book that I have chosen for the first Read With Me box. Follow @read.create.play on instagram for clues. I’ve been chatting with the author-illustrator and I’m so excited to share her work with you. She’s even sent a brand new little goodie to include in each box!

I’m so excited about my new venture because I get to shop for books and share the best finds for you and your children to enjoy too. Together we can indeed ‘fill your house with stacks of books’ - and lovely ones to boot!
